What is the Difference Between Keto Mozzarella Sticks and Regular Mozzarella Sticks?

The mozzarella sticks you get in a restaurant or deep fry at home are high calorie and high in carbohydrates. They are also not gluten-free.

Our version uses keto breading and transforms this delicious cheese treat into a low-carb appetizer.

Low Carb Mozzarella Sticks Recipe

Ingredients

  • 6 pieces string cheese sticks

  • 1 large eggs beaten

  • ¼ cup almond flour

  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese (the powdered kind in a can)

  • 1 tablespoon coconut flour

  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt coarse Kosher salt works best

Instructions

  • Cut string cheese in half crosswise.

  • Beat 1 egg in small bowl. Set aside.

  • Place almond flour, Parmesan cheese, coconut flour, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and salt in a size resealable bag. Shake dry ingredients in the bag to blend.

  • Dip each piece of mozzarella into the beaten egg and then coat it by shaking it in the breading in the bag.

  • Spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray or cover it with parchment paper. Place each breaded mozzarella stick on the pan.

  • Place the container in the freezer and freeze for at least one hour.

  • There are two ways to cook this, in a pan filled with oil or an air fryer.

  • If cooking on top of the stove: fill a small fry pan with an inch of oil (we prefer olive oil). Preheat oil to 350. Cook until mozzarella sticks are browned on each side.

  • If looking to air fry them: Use non-stick spray to coat the bottom of your air fryer basket. Set air fryer to 375 degrees. Cook time is 3 minutes, then flip and cook for another 2-4 minutes.

Note: if you like extra breading, you can use the double-coating method. You will want to do the egg wash a second time, as well as putting it in the flour mixture a second time. They need to freeze for at least an hour between each breading. It is also worth noting that the extra layer of breading adds carbohydrates.

A serving size of three mozz sticks have about 200 calories and 4 net carbs.

No Flour Keto Fried Mozzarella Sticks Recipe

Another way to make mozzarella sticks is to use pork rinds in place of the keto breadcrumbs. This variation makes crispy, golden brown snacks just like above.

  • 8 sticks mozzarella string cheese, cut in half

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • ½ cup crushed pork rinds

  • ⅓ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

  • ½ tsp garlic powder
